Kia ora koutou,

My name is Daryl Watene and I am the teacher in Room 6. This year my classroom is lucky to have three awesome staff members; Nicky, Trace and Kerry who all work with the students on a daily basis.

I am now in my fifth year at Te Kura Pukenga o Rotorua. The class is made up of twelve students varying in age from 13 - 21 years of age.

The students in Room 6 have a varied learning programme where literacy and numeracy are integrated through S.P.E.C (Supported Preparation for Employment and Citizenship which is a skills for living programme), LEGO, music and kapa haka. We also have specialist involvement throughout each week that help our students to grow in their confidence, cognitive, and physical abilities.

The students also spend time each week off site which allows them to integrate within the community. We visit places such as MIGs gym (flexibility, fitness and overall hauora), Rotorua Squash Centre, Aquatic Centre (for water safety and swimming), the library and the redwoods/tree trust for walking and exercise. Our older students will aim to complete a job experience module within the community - (depending on availability of worksites) where they can experience what it is like to work within one of our many businesses here in Rotorua.

Finally, we are all very proud of our two (Manukura) school leaders PJ and Chiana who are both extremely willing to help out and support others where they can by being excellent role models for the students of Te Kura Pukenga o Rotorua. Also as part of their brief they will work towards building and maintaining positive relationships between all members of the school community. We wish them well for the year ahead.

Ngā mihi nui kia koutou
